Log Cabins and Log Homes

Great looking log house with twin storeys and front veranda covered in fresh snow

The above is a great looking log cabin home with twin storeys and front veranda covered in fresh snow.

Everyone loves a log cabin home, don’t they? Sure they do! Log homes conjure up in the mind, relaxation nights by the open fire, snow piled up outside, and a cosy warm atmosphere surrounded by all that wood.

What is a log home or a log cabin to be exact? According to Wikipedia a log cabin “…is a dwelling constructed of logs, especially a less finished or architecturally sophisticated structure. Log cabins have an ancient history in Europe, and in America are often associated with first generation home building by settlers.”

So, it kind of goes without saying that most log homes and cabins to be found are likely to be in the countryside, in the mountains and in the wilderness.

The history of log homes in the USA dates back to around the mid 17th Century. According to Wikipedia, “Historians believe that the first log cabins built in North America were in the Swedish colony of Nya Sverige (New Sweden) in the Delaware River and Brandywine River valleys. Many of its colonists were actually Forest Finns, because Finland was an integrated part of Sweden at that time.”

Log cabins historically were crafted primarily from long straight tree trunks that are laid horizontally on top of each other side by side. They were connected by interlocking the ends with notches, although some were simply nailed and not built with notches. The nailing option wasn’t as structurally sound as the notching method.

In frontier, pioneering days, the building site was the most important part of building for a log cabin. It was essential that the site provided adequate sunlight as well as drainage. Frontier life was brutal, and these homes had to provide the very best quality of life possible within such a harsh environment.

The choice of trees from which the logs for these cabin homes were made, were typically old-growth trees with as fewer limbs as possible and ideally straight up and down with minimal taper.

“Careful notching minimized the size of the gap between the logs and reduced the amount of chinking (sticks or rocks) or daubing (mud) needed to fill the gap. The length of one log was generally the length of one wall, although this was not a limitation for most good cabin builders.” Wikipedia tells us.

In log cabin construction, there were decisions to be made as to what type of dwelling it was to be. Key considerations that had to be taken into account included, the likely size of the house, whether it would single or double storied, roofing type and where to place the doors and windows. Also, depending on the available sources of raw materials (trees, stone, labor, etc) there may be some limitation on the log cabin size and proportions.

The log cabin homes of today have been adapted to modern building construction techniques through the use of squared logs with carefully hewn corner notching on the exterior. The insides are reflective of the needs of modern families with open plan living spaces and areas. Today’s log houses are often spacious and elegant when compared with their predecessors from the bygone era.

Pets and Pet Houses

Pets and Pet Houses -Adorable British blue cat lying on a beautiful contrasting white fluffy background

This feature is all about pets and pet houses, and we kick the page off with this adorable British blue cat lying on a beautiful contrasting white fluffy background.

It is an exciting moment when you finally make that decision to own a pet and you’ve made a choice on what type of pet is suitable for you and your environment. There a number of things that you do need to consider before that day arrives to collect that special animal in your life.

Goldfish in a round aquarium fishbowl with pebblesGoldfish in a round aquarium fishbowl with pebbles

One of the more important things to consider is that your new pet will need a lot of your time and you need to consider how that is going to fit into your daily routine. Will you remember to walk your dog twice daily, grooming your cat if required, (if they are the type of cat that needs daily brushing).  If you are time poor maybe you need to consider a lower demand pet like a fish or a bird. You want this to be a great relationship. Something you enjoy, so consider carefully what time you have to give to the animal you are getting, so that it works well for both of you.

Choosing a pet because they are trendy at the moment or on how cute they are is without doubt the worst decision people could make in choosing a pet. Unfortunately and tragically most of these pets end up being sold on or taken to animal shelters when they show themselves to be too demanding, high in energy or the cuteness just fades as they mature. There are a number of vital points that need to be considered carefully before making that ultimate choice in pet type and breed.

When you have made a decision on the type of pet you are going to adopt/purchase, make sure to research thoroughly the breed that you are getting so you really understand all these characteristics and be honest with yourself if it doesn’t fit with your lifestyle.

A green and gold colored wavy parrot stands on a branch in it's cageA green and gold colored wavy parrot stands on a branch in it’s cage.

If you’re lucky enough to meet the breeder of your pet, ask heaps of questions about their temperaments and their likes and dislikes. Chat to your local vet and see what they can tell you about the breed you are considering purchasing. If you have children consider how your chosen pet will tolerate children, are they comfortable around typically noisy children running around. Some animals require a lot more attention and interaction while others are mostly independent. Research, Research and Research and then choose carefully.

Having a good vet is vital in helping you manage your pet’s care as needed. You need to really trust the vet you choose and have a good relationship with them. Don’t just pick them based on how they interact with you, watch them with the animals they treat to see if you are comfortable with how they do this. If you haven’t already got a relationship with a vet, shop around until you find one that suits your needs. Ask for testimonials from the vet and ask friends for their recommendations if they are already pet owners. Having a great vet is invaluable when you need them, which is often in an emergency.

Bringing your pet home is one of the most exciting times to introduce them to their new home and the people that live in their environment. Before you bring him/her home look around and consider it from your pets point of view in making it safe for them. Will they chew cords lying about, have you got pills left out that they could get into. Check the plants inside and outside your home and make sure none of them are poisonous for animals. Certain foods can’t be left out such as chocolate; dogs will get extremely sick if they eat this. Making your home pet friendly before you bring them home will give you peace of mind.

Choosing the right food for your pet is crucial and this can change over time as your pet ages and has different needs. Good pet shops will be able to give you advice on all the different types of foods available and I would certainly ask your vet for their advice if you are still not sure. Getting their food right is essential for a happy healthy pet for a good long term healthy life. Always have fresh water put out daily, as all animals need to have a cool regular supply of water to keep them hydrated particularly when it is hot.

When you have finally got your pet home please be prepared for an adjustment period for everyone. Often it can take weeks for your cat/dog to settle into their environment and to feel safe and know their surroundings. If it’s a puppy you are adopting they might cry/whimper for the first few days and don’t be tempted to take them to your bed at night. It is better to make a snuggly warm bed for them in an enclosed space so that they can’t go wandering. During the day your puppy can be free to wander and explore so he/she can smell everything. Kittens usually are easier to settle, put their snuggly warm bed close to their litter tray so it is easy to locate in the first few days of settling in.

House training your pet is vital from day one if you want a contented happy home. There is nothing worse than stepping on, or discovering puddles or mess’s everywhere. If your chosen pet is a kitten as soon as you get home introduce the litter box and then place them gently in this a few times a day until you can see that they are comfortable at locating it. If it’s a puppy as soon as you get them home, take him/her outside for a walk around the neighbourhood so he can do his toileting and understands this is when he toilets. It doesn’t have to be a long walk just enough to get him used to the idea as this big new environment will seem a little scary at first.

We all love to buy our pets treats and toys whether it is balls for our puppies, catnip bird like toys for our kittens or cool aquarium toys for our fish or turtle. There is a vast array of them in any pet shop and it is easy to spend a small fortune and get carried away. Select these toys carefully and make sure just like we would with young children that buttons or other small things won’t come off and potentially lead to choking.

Adorable Labrador dog lying on a messy sofaAdorable Labrador dog lying on a messy sofa

Treats are another ‘must have’ especially for puppy’s. They can be used in the aid of training your puppy when used in the right way. Get the treats that have the highest nutritional value. Cats love treats too and again select the treats that have good nutritional value and don’t feed too much as they can sometimes be used too often, which can lead to a weight problem. Kittens will also love tall scratchy poles. They love clambering up and down these and get used to scratching the pole and hopefully not your prized furniture or rugs.

Another thing you may want to consider is getting your dog/cat neutered. Get advice from your chosen vet about when is the best age to get this done for your pet. Most get their pets done between four to six months but get advice on when the time is best for your pet if that’s what you choose to do.

Beautiful guard dog lying near it's doghouseBeautiful guard dog lying near it’s doghouse

There is nothing more devastating than when your pet goes missing. That is why every pet if possible should be microchipped or at least wear some kind of identity tag so if they wander off, you have a very good chance at getting them back as all your contact details are readily available on the collar or tag hanging from the collar. Also take good photos of your pet so he is easily identifiable and keep this up to date as they change through the years. This makes it easier if they are lost for other sets of eyes to help identify them quickly. If you change addresses remember to contact the company that has your details for the microchip so they can easily contact you if required.

Designer Outdoor Patio Furniture

Designer Outdoor Patio Furniture

Many people like to treat the garden area immediately next to their house as an extension to their home, almost like another room in the house. The area if often transformed via timber decking, or a paved patio area into a distinct outdoor patio area and may or may not be covered with an awning, plastic sheet roofing, a portico, an umbrella, a shade sail, or perhaps no covering at all.

The whole purpose to this area is to enjoy the balmy summer evenings as a result of extended daylight hours due to the sun setting so much later.

The area tends to get a lot of use during the summer months, perhaps even more so than the inside lounge or living room. A common use of the area is to create an outdoor cooking or barbecue spot matched with appropriate outdoor furniture and furnishings and perhaps even a swimming pool and a hot tub.

For later parts of an evening, some people may choose to have a outdoors brazier or outdoor gas heater to continue the ambiance of conversation and socialization with friends into the late hours. This truly is where many memories are made.

When it comes to outdoor furniture, there’s such a wide variety of outdoor furniture available on the market these days that can fit just about any outdoor area or any price point.

Why Designer Outdoor Patio Furniture?

If I’m looking to buy outdoor patio furniture, why should I spend my money on expensive designer patio furniture? Well, you wouldn’t go and put a tatty old sofa in your living room, or a second hand bed in your bedroom, but many people are happy to put up with cheap generic brand plastic furniture in their garden, patio or deck. This is usually foolhardy, as it often means you need to replace it within a year or two when it breaks or wears out.

Paying the extra for a premium quality, reputable brand, sturdy piece of outdoor furniture really is more cost effective in the long run. There is definitely truth to the old sayings, “buy it once, buy it well,” or “no one ever regretted buying quality.”

Designer outdoor furniture
Image via www.diynetwork.com

The term designer outdoor furniture is no different really than designer indoor furniture. The quality is in the design and the construction and the fabric or the material used to build it. You can definitely invest in a very good piece of furniture that is unique in style and look and will be a talking point amongst your friends, however there are also just as many ‘replica’ pieces of designer furniture that you could consider if you’re working to a budget.

Image via www.archdaily.com.br

You can still look the part with a piece of ‘replica’ designer outdoor furniture that doesn’t break the bank but just make sure its a well built quality ‘knock off’ rather than a cheap and tacky Asian import that wont last any more than a season.

Luxurious and Comfortable

Often crafted out of the finest of materials such as; teak, cedar, aluminium, stainless steel, plastics, waterproof fabrics and glass, many modern designer outdoor furniture pieces really give your patio, deck or garden area the wow factor.

Whether its the full on ‘lounge room suite’ look-a-like set, or a good quality table and chairs with umbrella, you and your guests will be able to be entertained in style and comfort, and your summer parties will be the talk of the neighbourhood.

The range of outdoor designer furniture on the market today is so wide and varied that there will be a style to suit your tastes, your outdoor decor and the look and feel you want to present. Ranging from the traditional wooden bench, to a modern contemporary outdoor sofa, you’re sure to find something to suit your budget and your style.

What Should I Look For When Buying Designer Outdoor Patio Furniture?

Outdoor furniture
Image via www.southernhospitalityblog.com

As with anything “designer,” you’ll be paying for a premium product design. If its designed and made by a well known designer, then it should also have high quality construction and also be made from high quality materials as well. Your furniture should be well put together, sturdy, and finished to perfection.

Outdoor patio furniture
Image via www.blog.styleestate.com

There should be a logo, or a tag, or something to indicate who the designer is and as its not uncommon for these types of furniture pieces (if well cared for and maintained) to escalate in value over time. It also shouldn’t be unusual to expect at least a one year warranty to cover the furniture against any defects or problems associated with the craftsmanship and build.

Beautiful outdoor furniture

If you’re buying the furniture online shop around for where some of the best deals can be found. Be sure to factor the delivery costs in to the final price when setting your budget. Furniture is often big and heavy, and will always attract a premium delivery charge.

Outdoor lounge furniture
Image via on www.mydomaine.com

Check with the seller what their terms are if the furniture is delivered damaged or not to your satisfaction in some way.  It’s always wise to check the goods on delivery when it arrives, and BEFORE you sign an acknowledgment receipt for it.

Also, if you need to carry the furniture through any tight spaces to reach the destination in your garden, check with the seller first for the measurements of the items to be delivered. Once you’ve taken delivery and signed an acceptance document that everything is fine with the furniture and the delivery, you’re stuck with it, whether or not, you can carry it through to its’ planned location.

Exterior House Colors

Exterior House Colors - Painted Ladies Victorian houses in close up view

This is a feature picture gallery of exterior house colors.

The magic of exterior house colors & house color themes can be one of the single most effective means to bring a house or building to life.

The above image is of the well renown ‘Painted Ladies’ Victorian houses in close up view in San Francisco with each house showing off their stunning detail in the design and their color. Truly stunning.

When you are deciding what colors to paint your home, one of the things you need to take into account is that the exterior of your home needs to fit in within the existing environment you live in.

However, that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t reflect your own personal style and you slavishly just follow the traditional heritage colors for your type of home.

The exterior of your home is your way of showing off your home and its unique attributes.

It would appear that homeowners have re-awakened to the use of color in not only their interiors but also on their exteriors and they are being a little more adventurous with color and moving away from common old beige.

It doesn’t mean that you can’t stick to a classical style that doesn’t date, however, classical style can be contemporary or more traditional depending on your tastes.

You can use color on most exterior parts of your house whether it is wood, rendered brick, windows, roof tiles or corrugated iron.

Be aware that using dark colors on your roof will absorb ultraviolet light and heat whereas a light colored roof will reflect it.

The surrounding structures on the outside of your house, like the fences, garden walls and decks and verandas can be painted as well to tone in or contrast with the exterior of your house.

A beautiful row of Victorian houses in a variety of exterior paint colors housesThis beautiful row of Victorian houses in a variety of colorfully painted themes.

The color combinations on the weatherboards and around the windows, frames, doors, and entranceways have been well thought out to create a stunning effect.

Matching your outdoor furniture to the tones of your deck/veranda will create visual cohesiveness.

Have fun with your colors and don’t be afraid to get sample pots from your local color stores and paint them on in test patches and sit with it for a period of time to view the color in different lights to see how it looks in your environment.

Or if you are really not sure where to begin, consider getting in a professional color consultant who will be able to give you some advice on different color options and how to combine two, three or even four colors on your exterior.

They will have advice on the latest trends and color mixes and perhaps suggest colors that you hadn’t even considered.

Think about the history of your house too, and whether you follow the more traditional color scheme for your period of house or whether you would like a more contemporary approach with color.

You do need to think about your surrounding environment outside of your immediate area and consider how this reflects on your neighborhood.

Don’t be afraid to use color in a non-traditional way as can be seen on the houses featured below.

A beautiful Victorian three level white and black house.

The windows are all painted in black and contrast superbly with the crisp white of the boards.

The trim on the barge boards is also painted black highlighting the gorgeous lines of this house.

Something to keep in mind when considering your paint color choices, if you pick dark colors, it sometimes will make a house recede and appear smaller in size whereas a lighter finish will sometimes make it appear larger.

If your home has gorgeous detail around the windows or verandas, these are some of the pieces that you can paint in a different color that will enhance and highlight the detail and beauty of them.

As seen in the gorgeous houses above and below, each house has its own look and feel about it.

There is really no right or wrong, however, each exterior has reflected its owner’s visions and tastes, and is usually supported by good landscaping and/or a gorgeous setting that enhances the home.

Also, a minor point, but check with your local City Council as some may have limitations or restrictions on what colors you can paint your house, particularly if you reside in a well known traditional character home suburb.
