Log Cabin Designs And Other Holiday Homes In The Snow

A log cabin in the Idaho mountains covered with snow during a clear Winters dayThis luxurious log cabin is situated in the Idaho mountains. Covered with snow during a clear Winters day, it looks pristine and inviting with its interesting rock fireplace construction.

The log cabin and the log house terminology are often used by the lay person interchangeably, meaning many people confuse the term as being the same thing, but the reality is they generally describe different houses. A log house is typically a house constructed of ‘non milled’ logs and is often (although not always) of considerably more robust construction. A log cabin is a term more often used to describe a much smaller house of somewhat impermanent construction, and also usually less finished or less sophisticated from an architectural perspective than a proper log house.

The log house or log cabin is constructed from long trunks of timber usually pine or spruce. Particularly popular in the Scandinavian countries like Finland and Sweden where there is generally a higher availability of straight tall tree trunks. a log cabin’s uniqueness is in its simplistic construction, often able to be erected in days and usually without the need for nails. Their strength and stability is derived from the stacking of log on top of log and the interlocking ends and corners.

In this gallery, we show a selection of holiday homes and log cabins all covered in the snow. They all provide a sense of relaxation, which can obviously be heightened by relaxing and ‘chilling’ (excuse the pun) by a hot roaring fire on a cool winter’s evening. If you have an interest isn developing or building your own cabin in the wilderness, check out this book
