Little House in Brooklyn, New York

Little house in Brooklyn, New York

The owners of this 11-foot-wide, little house in Brooklyn New York a big city ROW house were faced with a conundrum that many young families in New York eventually confront: The possibility of sacrificing location for space.

After living in the house for eight years, the pair – an architect and a jewelry designer – chose to expand in order to make room for their two growing children and remain in the Brooklyn neighborhood they had come to love and admire.

The original 2-story, 1000 square foot home was completely gutted and extended to 4 levels by adding a bedroom suite above and digging a new urban mudroom below.

The narrowness of the house required the design to make effective yet frugal use of space; every inch was important.

Precise positioning of walls, doors, and windows was crucial as each floor was planned to serve a purpose.

The lowest level serves as a new entry, storage, laundry, and mechanical area; the first floor is a continuous public space with living, dining, kitchen, and library opening to gardens in the front and back; the second contains two kids’ bedrooms along with a 2-sink bathroom; while the topmost level holds the master suite with a sleeping area, bathroom, balcony, and terrace.

stairsA slender steel stair repositioned on the south side party wall connects the house vertically and draws more light, air, and views into the building.

Materials throughout the home are modest, natural, and unassuming: the rawness of unfinished steel and character-grade walnut is juxtaposed with the simple refinement of honed Carrara marble and matte ceramic hex tiles.

The result is a home that is not just larger, but livelier – filled with the possibility to do more and stay longer in a city that requires its residents to be resourceful, in effect a little house In Brooklyn, a big City.

How To Make A Small Room Look Bigger

How To Make A Small Room Look Bigger

Make A Small Room Look Much Bigger Than It Really Is

How to make a tiny space look bigger?

We all know how difficult it can be when asked a question like that, especially when you’re living in a big city with limited space to begin with.

With the development of City infrastructures, the prices of the houses have eventually risen and gone beyond the ability of most to afford their dream home.

Having and owning a spacious home is often now next to impossible for most people.

Although it is still possible to create an illusion that can make your tiny space look a lot bigger than it actually is without necessarily removing any of the essentials.

You can still enjoy a landscape view, lounge furniture, armchairs and many other larger scale creature comforts.

Want to know how?

Check out these quick and awesome hacks that can help make your home look significantly bigger than it really is.

spacious tiny spacesUse Multi-Utility Items

What are the items that take up most of the space within your house?

Consider replacing them.

Reorganizing your kitchen and using all kind of multi-utility items, for example, instead of shelves, you can use cabinets with partitions that can store many things such as food machinery, containers, ovens etc.

They would provide a lot more functionality compared to a shelf, whilst also not taking up much space.

Similarly, you can use convertible sofa sets and beds in your living room and bedroom.

Likewise, you can also choose a dining table which can get adjusted and has a detachable top to make the most of what you have.

Additionally, you can also revamp your old sofa and make it a funky one.

Likewise, you can do for other furniture sets also.

tiny spacesCreate An Illusion For The Ceiling Height

Go for the things which don’t have horizontally big but vertically small.

Keeping a low-slung sofa, large mirrors and curtains that reach the floor length would suffice the requirement.

Additionally, you can also paint the windows according to the exteriors of your house or according to the walls of the room.

Try including the furniture pieces which occupy the maximum square foot.

Doing this will help you execute the illusion in the best possible way.

tiny spaces cornersMake The Most Of Every Corner

Since your house is not so spacious, make the most of every corner.

Include alcove shelves in every corner of the house.

They look very attractive and at the same time would be helpful in storing the maximum amount of extra stuff.

You can paint them using oil paints and can decorate them using flower vases, jute baskets, a marble-filled bowl, a couple of books and so on.

All this will add a little class to your house making it look larger than life.

Make a tiny space look spaciousColors And Textures

Color and textures would brighten up your room.

So add lots of colors but don’t go overboard.

Choose your color palette wisely.

Try including primary colors such as royal blue, pale yellow, vanilla, and right red color.

Also, make sure that these colors are versatile in nature and can be added with other colors to form different colors.

Just like colors, textures also play a significant role.

A faux leather sofa, silk cushions, shiny lamps, all these add texture creating an illusion of your house having a rich and sophisticated atmosphere.

Making a tiny area look spaciousBe Friends With Shower Curtains

Many people part their washrooms with their bathing rooms which in turn takes a lot of space.

For that extra privacy, they put glass doors which are very expensive.

To reduce the cost, try using shower curtains instead of glass doors.

They provide the maximum opacity and are very budget friendly.

Moreover, you don’t need to squeegee them every time you take a shower.

Use Mirrors

Using mirrors on the walls, especially floor to ceiling mirrors can be one of the most effective methods to make a space look bigger than it is.

Surely, you must remember walking into a room with full-length mirrors along a wall and having the perception that the room is massive, only to realize that the extra space you can see if purely a reflection.

Get Inspired From Magazines

Magazines and design websites contain an infinite number of creative images and tutorials that can make you awestruck. Watch some of the tutorials and cut your favorite images.

Put them together to create a masterpiece.

Using skylights to make a tiny space look spaciousAdding Skylights

Skylights are amazing as they bring the maximum amount of sunlight in a gloomy room.

They are also inexpensive as compared to other bulbs and tube lights.

A bunch of skylights would cost you around £250, or $300-$350

Create Your Own Rug

If you’re skeptical about rugs and carpets, then you can always create one.

Collect all the unwanted clothes and stitch them.

Who knows, you may end up getting a designer style of carpet.

Additionally, you can also get designs to create one from the internet, also, it would be very cheap.

Recycled Jars in the KitchenAdd Eye Appealing Kitchen Tiles

By putting kitchen tiles which are laminated, you add to the beauty of it.

You can also match the tiles with a marble worktop.

A customized worktop would cost you around $1500-$2000 and installation charges would be around $150-$200.

Compact modern apartment with effective use of space to create set areas of kitchenette, dining & living spacesFurniture Placement

Don’t put the furniture against the walls.

Sometimes placing a piece of furniture at a particular angle or in an open space would make the room look big.

In the smaller places, use stripes to lengthen the space.

Glass And Lucite Items

Using glass and Lucite pieces are in style at present and can also be multi-purpose without taking up much of the space.

Break The Rules

Just because it is a living room, it doesn’t mean you need to put a sofa set, a coffee table or a television.

Sometimes, going out of the box creates a lot of drama.

Put a swing or a rocking chair or maybe put both.

Be more open to experimenting and exploring your thoughts to get the best outcome.

335 Sq ft tiny beach house with bathroom, full kitchen, two decks, and French doors

It’s not always necessary to have a big house to make it look spacious and lavish.

Sometimes, even the smallest houses can create an illusion of being big and luxurious.

Extraordinary things are done by thinking out of the box and working in that tangent. If you want to give a designer look to your house, you can DIY.

All you need is a little effort and willpower to make it work.

So, go ahead make your house one of its kind. After all, a house should always portray the people who’re living in it.

Buying a Tiny House – How Much Is A Tiny House?

Cottage Style Tiny House- via pinterest.comvia www.pinterest.com

So you’re considering buying a tiny house. A common question that gets asked following on from that is “how much is a tiny house? What do they cost?”

In the past few years, the interest in Tiny Houses has escalated beyond anyone’s expectations.

So much so, that there are now businesses that manufacture prefab tiny houses for sale.

There are even businesses that have taken up the gauntlet and set themselves up and focus on used tiny houses for sale.

These aren’t necessarily just your tiny little 200 square feet boxes on trailer wheels either.

Some of these tiny houses actually extend out to being around 400+ square feet in size.

The innovation, creativity and sheer mindfulness of many of the creators of these little homes have to be seen to be believed.

Many of their designs are pure genius and yet often times the designer had no previous design or architectural skills or knowledge, they simply used their ingenuity to create something that fits their lifestyle needs.

When you’re looking to live in a space that you are going to be building, it does make you think about the practicalities and potential pitfalls of your design, so when it comes to putting it all together, it works.

One of the beautiful things about tiny houses (that is possibly missing in many other construction industries) is the close-knit community that seems to surround the tiny house industry.

There is definitely a culture of sharing and that extends to sharing ideas, experiences, tips, and creativity to help one and other achieve the most practical use of their limited space.

Amazingly Architectural Designed Tiny Housevia www.youtube.com

After all, one of the reasons behind building or buying a tiny house is to conserve capital, save money, live more frugally, or simply to escape the demands of modern society.

And because most tiny house owners share the same type of philosophy, there is more openness to sharing ideas and experiences.

Mainstream business is beginning to catch on to this new industry though.

If you explore the web, when buying a tiny house, you’ll find websites that have tiny houses for sale and small houses for sale.

You’ll also find tiny house kits for sale and prefab tiny houses for sale too.

So, there are two routes you could pursue if you were looking to change your lifestyle and start living in a tiny home.

Compact Tiny House Designvia www.ana-white.com

You could be creative and buy all the various component parts you need to build your own tiny house (perhaps in a workshop, a garage, or out the back of your property or someone else’s).

Or you could look to buy a kitset that enables you to still build your own, albeit someone else’s design, but more than a likely a proven design that isn’t going to be difficult to put together.

Or you could simply purchase an already built tiny house built by someone else, or perhaps a secondhand or used tiny house that you find for sale on the web.

Two Level Tiny Housevia www.design-shuffle.com

The decision on which way to go will depend entirely on your time available and your overall affordability, or financial resources.

Sometimes if you’re limited on finances, you can achieve a lot by roaming around recycling centers or even demolition yards, where you often source some great pieces for your new home for next to nothing.

Why have tiny houses become such a growing trend of late?

We take a quote from ‘Wikipedia’ which summarizes some interesting facts about home sizes over recent times

Nice Tiny House Design With Deckingvia www.pinterest.com

“In the United States the average size of new single-family homes grew from 1,780 square feet (165 m2) in 1978 to 2,479 square feet (230.3 m2) in 2007, and to 2,662 square feet (247.3 m2) in 2013, despite a decrease in the size of the average family. Reasons for this include increased material wealth and prestige.

The small house movement is a return to houses of less than 1,000 square feet (93 m2). Frequently the distinction is made between small (between 400 square feet (37 m2) and 1,000 square feet (93 m2)), and tiny houses (less than 400 square feet (37 m2)), with some as small as 80 square feet (7.4 m2).

Sarah Susanka has been credited with starting the recent countermovement toward smaller houses when she published The Not So Big House (1997).”

Beautifully Designed Tiny Home Lotus Mini Modelvia www.businessinsider.com

An interesting fact is that the tiny house growth is not unique to just the USA.

There are many people now all around the world wanting the benefits of owning their own home that find the typical price of a standard house out of their financial reach.

The tiny house movement is one method that is helping those forced to look at alternative home ownership options due to unaffordability of the typical house on a plot of land (or even unaffordable apartments in the central parts of most cities.

New Frontier Tiny Home -Alpha2via www.newfrontiertinyhomes.com

However, whilst tiny houses may provide a fantastic, convenient and affordable means of living, it does (or has) presented some very real problems and that is where do you put it? Wikipedia gives us a few more insights into this;

“One of the biggest obstacles to the growth of the tiny house movement is the difficulty in finding a place to live in one.

Zoning regulations typically specify minimum square footage for new construction on a foundation, and for tiny houses on wheels, parking on one’s own land may be prohibited by local regulations against “camping.”

In addition, RV parks do not always welcome tiny houses.

DIYers may be turned away, as many RV parks require RVs be manufactured by a member of the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association “(RVIA)”.

Tiny House Cypress Finish With Black Roofvia www.tumbleweedhouses.com

Tiny houses on wheels are considered RVs and not suitable for permanent residence, according to the RVIA.

From RVBusiness, “The RVIA will continue to shy away from allowing members who produce products that are referred to as ‘tiny houses’ or ‘tiny homes’. (However, the RVIA does allow “tiny home” builders to join as long as their units are built to park model RV standards.)”

Basecamp Tiny House Wood Designvia www.Inhabitat.com

In 2014, the first “tiny house friendly town” was declared in Spur, Texas; however, it was later clarified that a tiny house may not be on wheels but must be secured to a foundation.

In July 2016, Washington County, Utah revised their zoning regulations to accommodate some types of tiny houses.”

So, you can see that the tiny house movement is constricted somewhat in growth due to the controls exerted by many organizations, and local authorities.

Still, the tiny house community is a resourceful one, and they are very adept at having to think outside the square, and so consequently, they are also quite adept at finding solutions to the location problem.

Moschata Main Level Floor Plan

For those people who are still committed to living the tiny house lifestyle and want to build or buy their own tiny house, we would suggest doing some extensive research into where you intend on placing your new home first.

A part of the whole tiny living process is to live a peaceful, resourceful, self-sufficient lifestyle and wherever you plan to lay your little piece of paradise, try and make sure you have some security around where you decide to live.

The last thing you need is to create your little sanctuary, only to find you’re being asked to ‘move along’ within a few weeks or months.

If you can afford to purchase your own little block of land, ideally not in a central part of a city, check with the local authority before you part with your money to ensure they don’t have any rules that will prevent you from setting up your tiny home there.

Below are some external website resources that will help you in buying a tiny house to fit your tiny home lifestyle creation.

Tiny House And Small Apartment Decorating Ideas

Space in Your Tiny House or Apartment. Yellow tiny house with picket fence8 Ways To Maximize Your Tiny House Or Small Apartment Space

There is nothing more fulfilling than owning a home, whether its a house or an apartment.

Making the most of the space in your tiny house or apartment is crucial to get the most out of the space.

Utilizing tiny house and small apartment decorating ideas to maximize the use of this limited space to create that overall homely comfortable feeling will make a massive difference to your overall enjoyment of living there.

This is what we all yearn for; Home ownership.

Some attain this with their hard work and good fortune, while on the contrary many have to deal with the frequent hassles often created by their landlords.

So, if you’re one of above blessed house owners, then it’s an enormous thing, irrespective whether you reside in a one bedroom flat, or a luxurious villa!

Yes, if the accommodation is on the smaller side, one tends to feel a bit curbed when the family and the space requirement grows with time, but there are many things you can do to get most out of your home-sweet-home.

Benefits Of Installing Shelves In Your House

Oak wall mounted shelves in a dining room with blue sofa and wooden dining tableAs we all know, flexibility is the game when it comes to space and storage in an undersized house!

Therefore, shelves are one of the best ways to stock up all your belongings in an organized approach.

And, in fact, they not only store your things, but also keep them at your arm’s length, so that you get hold of them anytime.

A well-mounted shelf can take full advantage of the storage potential anywhere in the house.

Thanks, to its flexibility and simplicity they can be placed in any room without exceptions, from kitchen to your living room these shelves are vital in your pursuit to get most of your constrained house.

However, you need more than just free space on the wall to make this system work efficiently.

There are certain things to look at, first of all, measure the area and finalize on the size of the shelves.

Secondly, make sure the shelves you want to set up can manage stuff you’re planning to load on.

And at last, the material you opt for these shelves.

Choose Furniture With Multiple Uses

Use multiple lighting fixtures in the bedroomIf you don’t have much space in your hall, then it’s better to look for furniture that can be folded and stored away or has multiple usages.

Today, this kind of modish furniture is easily available in the home interior market like the sofa-bed, utilize it as a sofa in the hall during the day, and employ it as a bed in your bedroom in the night.

You also search for a dinner table that can be extended to form a single bed or folded as a center table.

Aren’t these are some great space saving ideas?

And, don’t be under a misconception that these sorts of furnishings are merely for cutting down on some extra square feet, they are in great demand because of their chic appeal.

Hidden Storage

St Charles hidden kitchen pantrySecret storage! Yes, you heard it right.

This sort of storage space is not meant to store up your undisclosed stuff, but to stock things that you actually don’t need in your day to day life, like your guitar which was your best pal some years back, but now you don’t have time to vibrate its stings, and at the same time also don’t want to toss it in the trash.

There are many things which are kept in-house occupying space and accumulating dust, and you don’t get rid of it because you have an emotional attachment towards them, in that scenario hidden storage are perfect.

Hidden storage allows you to smartly tidy everything away and remove clutter.

In simple words, a less chaotic house creates the illusion of space and this is especially important in a tiny home.

Look out for beds that have shelves in them, tables with drawers and you can even get chairs that lift up for extra storage space.

Store Things Vertically

Vertically stacking and storing kitchen crockeryYou don’t need to go through the laws o physics to know why storing things vertically space saves.

There is no rocket science, the vertical storage take up less space in the room so you can maneuver them more freely and (or) have extra furniture.

Make Use Of The Lofts In Your House

Make the most of attic spaceIf you have lofts in your dwelling, then ensure that they are being employed properly for storing both your wanted and unwanted possessions, otherwise, they will be just wasted spaces in your house.

Here you can store your books, clothes, furniture, and many other things which you don’t use often.

Improve The Lighting In Your House

Improve your house style with natural light interiorsMake your cramped room feel grander by installing mirrors and having massive size windows in the house.

This will maximize the natural light catching capability of the house, and hence creating an illusion that your house is spacious.

Rethink Rooms

Guest bedroom that is a true getawayYour relatives and neighbors all might have a guest room in their house, but ask yourself whether you actually need one?

What about an extra washroom off the visitors’ room; does anyone use it more a few times in a year?

Make a list of all the rooms in your house along with their purpose to get the most out of your accommodation because there is often a case where the biggest room in the house is being used the least.

Now You See Me – Raise The Bar Of Your Creative Thinking

In a versatile room, a coffee table can be space-hogging annoying.

So, what to do?

Show your smarter side by installing a built-in table that retracts into the flooring with a click of a button on the remote.

Of course, these ideas like these don’t work on peanuts; you need big bucks for that!

Nevertheless, you still hunt low-cost ideas on the internet or contact top home renovators in your town like the once, who have worked on successful projects like the Evergreen Retirement Village which is having the best in class infrastructure, and amenities which are second to none.

Kids bed bunks with built in desk and storageLiving in a small or tiny home can make anyone an out of the box thinker in a hurry and the same goes for many apartment dwellers.

There isn’t the luxury of separate rooms and you have to make every inch count.

So, try to follow at least one or two from the above ideas to grab most of your tiny house.

Manhattan Loft Apartment 425 sq ft Micro Apartment Renovation Project

Manhattan loft apartment showing overall wide perspective view of the whole micro-apartment

The above image shows an overall wide perspective view of the whole apartment from the staircase, showing full view of the kitchen and breakfast nook as well as the mezzanine bedroom that floats above the living room.

This project involved the radical transformation of a tiny, awkward apartment at the top of a six-story building in Manhattan New York. With only 425 square feet of floor area to play with, but a ceiling height of over 24 feet, the new design exploited these inherent sectional possibilities, and created a flowing interior landscape that completely dissolved the notion of distinct “rooms.”

Kitchen with an abundance of cupboard space and simple cooking and washup facilitiesThe kitchen area boasts an abundance of cupboard space and simple cooking and wash-up facilities as well as a work bench that continues round the wall adding an area for a breakfast nook or simple dining table.

The architectural strategy by Specht Harpman Architects created four “living platforms” that accommodated everything necessary, while still allowing the apartment to feel open and bright. The spaces are interleaved, with a cantilevered bed that hovers out over the main living space, an ultra-compact bath tucked beneath the stair, and a roof garden with glazing that allows light to cascade through the space.

The modern staircase possesses plenty of under stair cabinets and storage. The previous bare red brick wall can be seen behind the stairs now painted a brilliant white providing real visual impact and contrast to the dark timber floors.

Every inch is put to use, with stairs featuring built-in storage units below, similar to Japanese kaidan dansu. The apartment is crafted like a piece of furniture, with hidden and transforming spaces for things and people.
