Tiny Houses and Shipping Container Homes

The tiny house movement has grown exponentially in the last few years. No longer do people crave the large scale multi storey houses of yesteryear. Instead they seem to yearn for the simpler life, living in a home that provides their basic requirements and no more. Hence the increased availability of tiny houses and smaller homes under 1000 square feet. The most popular size of tiny house seems to be between 300 and 500 square feet as it provides a generous feeling of inside space, but still gives one the full sense of having everything you need in a home.

Another aspect to the tiny house market is the increasing use of shipping containers as homes. These are often available in used form for very little investment and yet they provide you with over 100 sq feet of space that also provides a good ceiling height. To replicate the same floor, wall, and ceiling height dimensions in a standard built home, you would be paying considerably more. Given the vast availability of containers in either 20 or 40 foot lengths, the creative DIY person can certainly create a decent new home project from a number of containers. Not only that, but when completed they can look nothing like the original, and many times they look very attractive and desirable as well as providing much more floor space for fewer dollars than building a house from scratch.

Take a look through this gallery of 28 tiny houses and container houses as viewed from the outside. There should be a few styles that you like the look of or that give you some ideas of what might be achievable. So, of you’re looking for a ‘value build’ with limited financial resources (and space), then you may be hard pressed to find better value than considering building one of these home types.

Dutch Tiny House Opens Up With a Wall of Shutters by Zecc and Roel van Norel

Dutch tiny house -Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Exterior14-via-smallhousebliss

Just outside Utrecht in the Netherlands sits an amazing tiny house that also doubles as a vacation cottage.

Created from a partnership between Utrecht-based studio Zecc and Roel van Norel, the first thought upon viewing it, is that it is a gable roofed house but there are some interesting features built into this house that make it really unique, and highly desirable.

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Interior1-via-smallhouseblissThe new building happens to be the foundation of a pre-existing cottage which was reused, as its contours. The use and choice of materials were made that fit seamlessly into the surrounding quiet, wooded countryside. Gray-green slate was used and the wood siding is Western Red Cedar.

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Exterior 11-via-smallhouseblissWhilst you may expect the house to be symmetrical, it isn’t. The front of it has quite a generous roof overhang , whereas to the rear there in’t any. Instead it has a rear wall that has been fitted with slate roofing tiles that run the full height of the wall to the ground.

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Exterior7-via-smallhouseblissOn the other side, what initially looks like a wall with no windows is actually a wall covered with a many louvered shutters that extends the full length of the house. The beauty of this is that when the shutters are opened, a full length wall of glass is revealed.

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Exterior13-via-smallhouseblissFantastic for both daytime and night time aspects, when both privacy, daylight or sunlight become desirable. Even with the shutters all closed, the spacing of the cedar slats still permits adequate filtered light through.

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Interior5-via-smallhouseblissThe house has French doors at the gable end that provide entrance into the combined living dining and kitchen area which occupies approximately two thirds of the tiny house’s floor plan.

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Interior 4-via-smallhouseblissThe remaining third is allotted to a sleeping area, where there is adequate space for a double bed and also an additional sleeping area from the ladder accessed loft immediately above. For privacy purposes, if you require it, the sleeping area is able to sectioned off through use of a sliding panel retracting wall

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Interior6-via-smallhouseblissThe whole back wall of the house is finished with several oak cabinets designed and built by van Norel. This is where you will find the service and storage functions all built in that all seamlessly integrate everything along the one wall; the kitchen, the bathroom, the toilet, the clothing storage and even a wood burning fireplace.

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Interior9-via-smallhouseblissTo enable everything to be fitted in the small narrow width of the area, the bathroom has been split into three areas; the shower is in compartments, the toilet and a simple handbasin in in another, and a larger sink in the other.

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Interior7-via-smallhouseblissThe shower is accessible directly off the bedroom which provides a real ‘ensuite like’ convenience for drying off without that cramped in feeling.

Zecc and Roel van Norel Recreation Tiny House Exterior9-via-smallhouseblissThe garden house has been realized through a special collaboration between architects Zecc from Utrecht and the interior designer Roel van Norel. The basic concept was designed by Zecc, and then Roel van Norel has worked out the plan in detail and also created a of the internals.

The Most Luxurious 400Sq Foot Home Imaginable by Wheelhaus

400Sq foot home -The Wedge on the outside when sited

A fantastic looking 400Sq foot home with a sloped roof creating a very clever veranda area adjacent to the lounge sitting area. A fantastic design that easily incorporates indoor outdoor flow.

Wheelhaus is a leader in creating innovative portable small homes suitable for temporary accommodation or for vacation purposes. Founder and CEO Jamie Mackay who had been inspired by his father who worked in the log cabin construction industry whereby Jamie had come to believe in the value of quality construction and workmanship. In search of a Recreational Park Trailer for himself, he soon came to realize that there was nothing being made that met his high standards and expectations.

Transporting the Wedge by WheelhausIt naturally transpired that Jamie spotted a gap in the market that he could fill utilizing his knowledge, and experience to create the next generation of Park Model homes. He made it his goal to create and deliver high quality, convenient luxury living in a durable Park Model style home that would be on a par with the log cabins he had come to know growing up, all whilst incorporating both energy efficiency into the modern designs

Lounge and kitchen in the Wheelhaus Wedge

With a built in fireplace and a functional simple kitchen, there are all the creature comforts at hand in the Wedge designed home. All units come “turn key” with all appliances and hardware included and all you will need is your own furniture.

The Wheelhaus brand of convenient transportable compact homes was born. The Rolling Cabins that they produce are a blend of both modern and rustic styles. All taking their inspiration from the craftsmanship of log cabins and an overall attention to detail that also focuses on energy efficiency, innovative design, progressive space management, sustainable building practices and top of the line building materials. Their construction methods exceed the requirements for the Gold standard with the U.S. Green Building Council.

Often finished with more than features than a small apartment, they are pitched at under $100,000 and yet they can offer the same comforts of home, like a fireplace, air conditioning, full kitchens, a rain shower, private patio deck area and even wifi.

Looking from lounge into kitchenThe kitchen is not short changing you in any way, there is plenty of space for you to still be able use all the mod cons you’ve become accustomed to; a microwave, a refrigerator, a dishwasher and a reasonable kitchen bench top to create your culinary masterpiece.

The Wheelhaus designs are both innovative in their design and unique in the RPT Industry due primarily to their space management, the high quality construction, and top of the line materials used.

With more than half a dozen designs styles now available, the core concept is based around a 400 sq feet living space and a smaller 100 sq feet outdoor area. There is some flexibility to the design and they even offer financing, transportation to your site and setting everything up for you.

The Wedge Design
wheelhaus wedge floorplanThe ‘Wedge’ design which we feature on this page has an angled roof, that starts low above the bedroom and builds to 17 feet in the living room. Trapezoidal windows grow similarly from back to front, offering natural light while maintaining privacy. The front of the cabin is almost entirely glass with a large sliding glass door opening onto a private deck.

Bedroom-with King size bedThe cabin has a single bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen/living room and a private deck. The ceilings and exterior side are covered with rustic cedar siding with a barnwood patina colored stain.

From bed to TV and outside windowThe bedrooms are sized to fit a king size bed with two side tables and linen lamp style sconces. A set of four drawers and an under-counter hanging closet support a butcher-block counter top, which also serves as a desk. A spot for a 42-inch Internet accessible HD flat screen television is provided so you could mount one above the desk.

Inside lounge looking to kitchen

The kitchen/living room was designed to offer both comfort and functionality. The small kitchen features a two-burner cook top, an under counter refrigerator, a microwave, a dishwasher, a sink, concrete countertops and modern rustic cabinetry.

Lounge, fire and front doorThis picture shows a large bomber leather sofa, two cowhide ottomans, two barn wood side tables, custom made wrought iron lamps and railroad cart coffee tables make up living room furnishings. These don’t come with the standard build but are displayed to show you how you could setup your own decor. A mini-high efficiency gas burning fireplace warms the room. Above the fireplace you could choose to add a second 42 inch HD flat-screen television.

The glass panelled shower and toilet

The bathrooms are also small but functional. Heavy duty glass showers, Kohler toilets and custom vanities with concrete countertops/sinks and quartzite floors, combine to produce very well appointed facilities
