Picket Fence Homes and Picket Fence Designs

Picket Fence Designs shown in this Mansion with white picket fence

The above image shows a stunning suburban two storey mansion house in resplendent yellow with a beautifully neat white picket fence out front. It also has matching guard rails on the balconies and veranda that are in keeping with the front fence and gate.

A white picket fence not only performs the function of being a fence for setting up boundaries around a home or property, but it also has the added benefit of evoking emotions within people. You often hear people talk about wanting to settle for a cute cottage in the suburbs with a white picket fence, and this is because to most people it evokes a sense of cute, calmness when all is good with their lives.

The reality however, is that these days having enough land around your home to create or build a picket fence is rare, as many of us end up in apartments, or tiny blocks of lands in central city suburbs. The white picket fence has become the epitome of the country, or outer suburban lifestyle, where there are an abundance of trees, and lawns and plants.

The style of picket fence may vary, but the essence of a picket fence remains much the same, several well spaced posts of around 3 -4 feet in height, twin railing running between the posts and then the pickets attached to the railings usually with equal spacings in between. Some picket fences have pointed tops, others are flat, some even have graduated heights along the length of the fence (like in the image below). Whatever your preference, a picket fence, painted white, will look good and often add value and desirability to your home.

Cottage Garden Ideas

Cottage Garden Ideas from this Charming English style cottage

The above image shows this charming English style cottage set in a beautiful classic cottage garden with a white picket fence, an abundance of flowers and mature trees and a classic thatched roof giving the overall illusion of a fairy tale cottage. Just stunning.

According to “Wikipedia”, a Cottage Garden “is a distinct style of garden that uses an informal design, traditional materials, dense plantings, and a mixture of ornamental and edible plants. English in origin, the cottage garden depends on grace and charm rather than grandeur and formal structure. Homely and functional gardens connected to working-class cottages go back several centuries, but their reinvention in stylised versions grew in 1870s England, in reaction to the more structured and rigorously maintained English estate gardens that used formal designs and mass plantings of brilliant greenhouse annuals.”

Cottage gardens are often thought of as an English thing, however they needn’t be, as the overall look can be achieved in many places around the world where the climate isn’t overly harsh. Cottage garden ideas often go hand in hand with English garden landscaping, but to create your very own cottage garden look, you really only need to adhere to the concept of informality.

By using informal climbing plants, self-sowing annuals and also ensuring there is a liberal spreading of perennials, all mixed with a number of trees will help to create a dense growth of plant life, that given time will resemble that highly desirable Cottage garden look that most people adore.

Newton Tudor Remodelling Project, Massachusetts by Hacin and Associates

Newton Tudor Remodelling Project -Living room with grand fireplaceThe Newton Tudor remodelling project showing the living room with a magnificently grand fireplace, co-ordinated colors and stunning selection of timeless furniture.

The remodel of this 1930’s Tudor style suburban home in Newton, Massachusetts re-imagines a traditional, compartmentalized layout into a more informal living arrangement for a young family moving to the suburbs from the city.

The project included a full architectural renovation throughout this four bedroom home, as well as the design of all interior finishes, furniture, and fixtures. Rooms in the renovated home open directly to one another, providing long visual and physical connections accentuated by the use of natural materials that echo throughout the house.

The materials lend a contemporary feel to the house while respecting its original historic-revival identity. Repetition, reinterpretation, and an emphasis on natural materials and hand-made craft inform the integrated architectural and interior design concept.

View of the Newton Tudor house from the roadColor and material choices were based on a study of traditional Tudor architecture and design; furnishings, carpet, and decorative lighting were chosen with an emphasis on visible craft and casual family comfort.

English Countryside Cottages and Houses

Example of English Countryside Cottages in Lower SlaughterAn ancient but quaint example of English countryside cottages in Lower Slaughter beside a river canal.

Old English countryside cottages and houses have stood the test of time. Crafted from old proven materials like stone, rock, and brick they were built often with spaciousness and decoration in mind, and hence why they are still just as desirable today as they probably were back in the day when they were built.

The English countryside is still the heart of life and culture for the British. Despite the fact that most Britons now reside in Cities and towns, there still remains for many of these people, the feeling that a countryside cottage offers something of an idyllic lifestyle and place where it is still possible to have a relaxed lifestyle. The weekends and holidays often see many Britons heading to their beautiful, diverse, and often easily accessible countrysides for some rest and relaxation.

Many parts of the British countryside offer areas full of historic sites, pretty villages, monuments, memorials, protected areas, pubs with tables in the garden, a true part of what still makes England what it is. We think you’ll enjoy this gallery of beautiful classical and traditional style English countryside houses. Perhaps you’ll even make a decision to take your very own tour there one day.

Old Victorian Style Homes (Photos of Victorian Houses)

Victorian Style Homes. The Painted Ladies Old Victorian Style Homes from San Francisco

These Painted Old Ladies of Victorian Style Homes from San Francisco definitely don’t seem to have lost any of their charm or appeal over the years. They look just as fantastic and desirable as they probably always have.

There is something magical about an old house from the Victorian era. Whether its the quality and the pride of the workmanship that happened all those years ago, or the quality of the simple materials that were available back then. These homes don’t seem to lose their appeal. In fact in real estate circles, you often here people say when looking for a house, that one of their essential wants is ‘character features’.

When compared to most of the modern ‘everyday’ houses of today, which often lack any personality, a character house from the Victorian era, would now be getting on to around 120-180 years old. And the fact that many of these houses were built from good old traditional materials, like brick, stone, timber and not much else, and they were built with common sense construction techniques, you usually end up with a house that will stand the test of time and assuming it has been well maintained over the years, will still look good today. Many modern homes are built with not much more than a 50 year lifespan, and from materials that were unheard of in the 1800’s.

We love Victorian houses, and have brought you a selection of these classic beauties from around the world, although most of them are from either England or the USA. If you love these house as well, then take a look through this gallery and don’t forget to share this page with your friends.
